RD's Favorite Charity MIRA FOUNDATION The Mira Foundation is an organization in Canada that trains guide dogs for the visually impaired as well as assistance dogs for people in wheelchairs. They have satellite operations in Mexico and France. The school is located about 25 kilometers north of Montreal in Sainte-Madeleine. Foundation Mira was Canada's first training centre for guide-dogs for the blind and remains the only centre in Canada operating in both languages. It is also the only guide-dog school in the world that provides dogs to blind persons under 15 years of age. Since 1991, Mira has been developing a mixed-breed dog-- the "Labernese", a cross between the Labrador and the Bernese Mountain Dog--which is widely regarded as the first highly socialized breed of dog created by man with the object of helping humans. Mira was founded by the professional trainer Eric St-Pierre. In 1981, he made a commitment to devote all his time, knowledge and love for dogs to helping the blind. Over the years, Eric St-Pierre has gathered about him a team of equally dedicated people, and focused all his entrepreneurial talents on helping broaden the horizons of the blind. His dedication was recognized in 1995 when he was awarded the Grand Prize, Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year for Quebec. Mira is supported by more than a thousand volunteers across Quebec, as well as 200 families who provide home environments to specially selected puppies for the first 12 to 18 months of their lives.
