Surprises

"What are you doing Roy?" I screamed above the roar of the motorcycle that seemed to be taking us into orbit with Roy at the helm.

When he had picked me up at home and told me that he had a surprise for me I didn't think that included a face-lift from the Mach 1 ride. Darkness had swallowed us up about an hour into the ride and now I was totally lost and had no idea where he was taking me.

Ignoring my words, Roy kept driving into the night, determined on his destination, not talking. Closing my eyes and wrapping my arms tighter around his broad chest I slipped my hands under his jacket warming my hands with the heat of his body. I could feel his heart beat and it gave me a wonderful feeling of contentment. Regardless of the speed, I relaxed and let my sense of trust in him take over.

Roy's quick turn off onto the road and my lean with him jarred me out of my contentment and I opened my eyes still not knowing where he had taken me. The winding dirt road seemed to go on forever when suddenly before me was a lake with a small dock and a small boat tied on,  viewable with the full moon shining down on the dark calm water.

My heart swelled knowing that this was so Roy like. Knowing he was capable of doing romantic things and always being tender and loving, but in the last three years we had been forced to spend so much time apart that It made this moment even more meaningful and precious.

We finally had an entire summer alone, no work or family to interfere with our reunion.

I let out a gasp of surprise and delight. Roy turned his head slightly back towards me and I could see the slight grin that tells me he's proud of himself.

We continued on the winding road down to the dock and came to a stop by the boathouse. Getting off, Roy pulled me close and whispered in my ear "I love you, you know that?" It took everything in me to not just crumble on the ground right there at his feet.

"Roy, you never cease to amaze me" I whispered back at him followed by "I love you too!"

As I stood on the boat, Roy un-tethered the rope and I watched him move into Roy the Captain mode. He told me to sit down and relax; the ride would only take 20 minutes or so.

Life was good; it was so peaceful watching the darkness swallow up the shoreline as we headed further onto the lake. A million stars were shining down on Roy and I making the whole experience surreal and mystic.

Finally he brought the boat to rest in a secluded cove surrounded by high cliffs. Roy helped me ashore by picking me up off my feet and slinging me over his shoulder like I was a rag doll. I squealed with delight....."Roy, put me down!" lightly beating on his backside.

"Oh, ok, you want down right here?" he said playfully showing me that he was still in the water up to his ankles. At the same time he pretended to let me go eliciting another scream from me that echoed through the canyon.

Once I was safely deposited on dry ground I looked around and saw that there was a tent, two chairs, a fire pit and other camping equipment making me realize that Roy had come out here ahead of time and had set this all up. He got busy starting a fire as I stood in awe of all that he had done to surprise me for my 35th birthday.

"Roy?"

"Yea." He said slightly distracted with getting the fire going.

"This is so wonderful. I'm so happy!" it sounded inadequate for the way that I was feeling at that very moment.

"Yea, uh huh." I could tell he wasn't paying attention, which happened now and again, but I forgave him.

He took me by my arms and pushed me towards a chair that he had strategically placed by the fire and I sat obediently as he walked over to the tent and went inside.

"What are you doing, Roy?"

"Just wait, I can't hear you." He shot back mischievously.

"Close your eyes." He commanded and I once again obeyed.

I could hear Roy's ruffling around inside the tent and finally the slight scraping sound as he exited and moved back by my side.

"Roy? Come on!" I felt such excitement.

"Ok, open your eyes." At last he said.

There in his hands was a small birthday cake with white frosting and the words "A la vie" and one blue candle lit in the middle. "Close your eyes and make a wish", he told me.

Closing my eyes, it didn't take me long to decide what I would wish for and grinning, I opened my eyes and blew out the single candle with ease.

"There, now, what did you wish for?"

"Roy, you know I can't tell you cause it won't come true!" I told him seriously.

He let it go, and then sat the cake down on the small camping table and cut a piece for he and I, then we sat there in silence enjoying the cake and the fire and each other.

It was starting to get late and a little chilly. Roy took my hand and pulled me to my feet drawing me towards the tent.

"Now for your real birthday present", he teased looking deep into my eyes with that dreamy look he could give before making love.

Holding tightly to his strong hand as he led me towards the tent opening, I smiled thinking, yes sometimes our dreams and wishes do come true.
